At York, a broad mix of experimental and theoretical physics and astronomy is taught in a research-intensive environment. The Physics and Astronomy Program and the Biophysics Program provide undergraduates with laboratory experiences that are among the most sophisticated in the nation.  Of particular note are courses in laser physics that culminate with the construction of an atom trap, a unique undergraduate experience in all of Canada, as well as an opportunity for biophysics majors to employ laser tweezers in experimentation.  Astronomy majors have access to the modern observing facilities of the York Observatory starting from their first year of study.  Students enjoy easy access to dedicated professors and a teaching and learning environment of the highest quality.  Opportunities abound for interested undergraduate students to participate in world-class research projects led by faculty members.  Student life is further enriched by the Physics Society, the Biophysics Club, and the Astronomy Club, all of which offer opportunities to interact informally with students and professors with similar interests.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers two Programs of study distinguished by different curricular cores:

Biophysics (BSc)
Physics & Astronomy (BSc)

The Physics and Astronomy Program offers four paths of study, known as Streams, all with a common curricular core but distinguished through the specification of options:

Physics & Astronomy - Applied Physics Stream (BSc)
Physics & Astronomy - Astronomy Stream (BSc)
Physics & Astronomy - Physics Stream (BSc)

Physics & Astronomy - Space Science Stream (BSc)

The Space Science Stream is run jointly with the Department of Earth & Space Science & Engineering

The Department also offers opportunities to develop Honours Double Major and Honours Major/Minor programs with other disciplines in the Faculty of Science or in other faculties.
